Why You're Great in Practice but Choke in the Game (2026): Closing the Gym-to-Game Gap

TL;DR: If you're sharp in training and shaky when it counts, you don't have a skill problem, you have a pressure problem. Your body has thousands of reps at the skill and almost none at performing it while your heart is pounding in front of people who matter. That's a rep you can actually take, in your head, before the real thing. This is what mental rehearsal is for, and it's the same tool elite competitors already use to close exactly this gap.

I'm Peter, the founder of UpSpiral. The "great in practice, frozen in the game" story is one of the most common ones I hear, and it's also one of the most fixable. Most of this post is just the method.

Why am I great in practice but choke in the game?

Because you've trained the skill far more than you've trained performing the skill under pressure, and those are two separate things.

Every rep in training happens in a low-stakes state: relaxed body, no crowd, nothing on the line. So your skill gets deeply grooved in that state. Then game day arrives, adrenaline floods your system, your fine motor control and decision-making shift, and suddenly you're asked to run that grooved skill in a body that feels completely different from the one you practiced in. The skill is intact. The state is foreign.

A parent on r/sportspsychology described their son, a dedicated boxer, this way:

"He trains extremely hard and performs incredibly well in the gym, focused, sharp, and confident. But when it comes to official fights, everything changes. The moment he steps into the ring in front of a crowd, with the pressure of it being a real match, his confidence drops dramatically."

That's not a boxing problem. It's a gym-self versus game-self problem, and it shows up everywhere pressure does.

It's the same gap outside of sport

The moment a real audience appears, prepared performance can collapse, even when the skill is flawless. A student on r/PublicSpeaking captured it exactly:

"I can recite it word for word every time, but the second I imagine a crowd in front of me, it is almost like I get distracted and I begin to trip over my words."

Word for word, every time, until a crowd is even imagined. That tells you the missing ingredient was never the material. It was a rep at doing the thing while feeling watched and under pressure. Athletes, speakers, musicians, interviewers: same mechanism, same fix.

The missing rep: mental rehearsal

The tool that closes this gap is mental rehearsal, deliberately running the real, high-pressure moment through your mind in vivid, first-person detail before it happens. When you vividly imagine an action, your brain fires many of the same pathways it uses to actually perform it, so you're not just daydreaming, you're partially running the program. Done right, it lets you take reps at performing under pressure without needing the pressure to be real yet.

Researchers call the underlying mechanism motor imagery, and the effect is well established: a landmark meta-analysis by Driskell and colleagues (1994) reviewed decades of mental-practice studies and found a clear, statistically meaningful boost to performance, strongest when mental practice is paired with physical practice rather than replacing it. Brain-imaging work has shown that imagined movement even reshapes the same motor maps that physical practice does. This is why visualization isn't a fringe idea in elite sport, it's standard training. It's just rarely taught to the rest of us.

How to rehearse the game, not just the skill

Most people who "try visualizing" picture a vague highlight reel and stop there. That trains almost nothing. Here's what actually closes the gym-to-game gap.

  1. Rehearse the environment, not the empty gym. Put the crowd in. Put the stakes in. See the ring, the stage, the interview room, the real setting, not your safe practice space.
  2. First person, full senses, real time. Be inside your own body, the sounds, the surface under your feet, your breath, at the speed it actually happens, not fast-forward.
  3. Bring the nerves in on purpose. Feel the adrenaline, the pounding heart, the dry mouth. You are rehearsing performing in that state, that's the entire point. Rehearsing it calm only trains the version of you that never shows up on game day.
  4. Rehearse the wobble and the recovery. Imagine the shaky start, the missed shot, the tough question, and then rehearse steadying and continuing. Elite performers rehearse the disaster on purpose so it's already familiar if it happens.
  5. Pair it with your physical training. Mental reps amplify physical reps; they don't replace them. The research effect is strongest when you do both.

These points draw from PETTLEP (Physical, Environment, Task, Timing, Learning, Emotion, Perspective), a checklist sport psychologists use to make imagery as close to the real thing as possible. The common thread is fidelity: the closer your rehearsal is to the real pressured moment, the more it transfers.

Why "make it about the real moment" matters

Generic imagery scripts don't transfer, because your brain knows they aren't about your fight, your race, your presentation. The rehearsal that closes the gap is specific: your actual opponent, the real venue, the exact crowd, the particular thing you're nervous about.

The key is doing it right: first person, full senses, real time, and rehearsing the nerves rather than an idealized calm version.

How is this different from just telling myself to relax? "Relax" fights the adrenaline; mental rehearsal trains you to perform inside it. You deliberately rehearse the pounding heart and the wobble, plus the recovery, so the game-day state becomes something you've moved through before rather than something that ambushes you.
